Why I wait to change my MacBook Pro

August 7th, 2009 iAPX

I have a MacBook Pro pre-unibody (early 2008), bought in may’08 for my birthday (my own gift!!!), and it’s time for me to change my Mac, it’s slighty used after 15 months of heavy use and some crash (physical!).

What I want to have is a better laptop, that no more look like my 2005 Powerbook 15″, that have many advanced features:

  • faster CPU, at least 2 cores and 4 threads and ideally 4 cores
  • faster GPU, the level of 9800M GT (that is GT 130 that apple sold, or a renamed 8800 GTS!), ideally based on GT200 design for CUDA
  • 512MB GPU RAM for my projects instead of 256MB
  • better trackpad
  • better IO, with native eSATA …

The problem is, more than one year later, MacBook Pro of the same price I bought mine (around 2000$ CAD), has a CPU that is marginaly faster, but GPU that is 2X slower (IGP 9400M / MCP79), 256MB shared memory video-ram (2X slower than dedicated GDD of mine), no eSATA, and worse no ability to use eSATA, USB 3, FireWire 3200, directly read CF cards or SDXC or new Memory Stick HX.

And even if I pay more than I have done 1 year ago, I will stick have no more extension ability (eSATA, USB3, ..) and will be limited by GeForce 9600M GT that is the same GeForce 8600M GT of my MacBook Pro, renamed by marketing service of nVidia & Apple!!!

Apple seems to be the only computer manufacturer that want you to pay more to have less :-(
