MacBook Pro Autonomy

October 31st, 2009 iAPX Comments off

I have the actual generation of MacBook Pro, that is given for 8hours battry autonomy.

I dimmed the light, surfing the web with Safari 4 and Firefox 3.5, copied some files on external POWERED USB Drive, used Adium (MSN Client), lightweight use, but even with that my autonomy was 5h30 not 8 h. The Apple claim of 8h autonomy is just ridiculous!

PS: It’s just 1 hour more than a PowerBook G4 12″ or an iBook 12″, so small so efficient!

New 3.06Ghz iMac : slower than the old model!

October 26th, 2009 iAPX Comments off

I checked some benchmark results of XBench 1.3 on early 2009 3.06Ghz iMac, and discovered that the performance-level is really better than the new 3.06Ghz iMac:

New 3.06Ghz iMac score a deceptive 133 on 21.5inch and a not-so-whopping 171 on 27inch, both with 4GB DDR3 (2×2GB DDR3), 1TB 7200rpm hard-drive and underclocked ATI Radeon 4670 with 256MB video-ram. So it’s between 133 and 171.

Old 3.06Ghz generation scored approximately 201, and overall 1.2X faster than the 27″ new iMac! The old 2.93Ghz iMac is still 1.1X faster than new 3.06Ghz generation. Even a 2.8Ghz DDR2 24″ scores better than the new 27″ 3.06Ghz on XBench!

Worse, it seems the new iMac 21.5inch 3.06Ghz DDR3 Radeon 4670 is slower than 2007 iMac 20″ 2.4Ghz DDR2!

They are totally and deceptively under-performers, and the price tag may reflect the bad technical choices (probably ATI Radeon instead nVidia GeForce!), and an old entry-level iMac 2.66Ghz 24″ GeForce 9400M will outperform the brand-new 27″ Radeon 4670 model :-(

Strange new iMac 21.5″ & 27″

October 25th, 2009 iAPX Comments off

I just saw the new iMac 21.5″ and 27″, both on Core2 Duo 3.06Ghz/4GB/1TB/ATI 4670 …

I ran XBench on both, and I had surprising results. 21.5″ scored 133.16, with 217.22 on CPU, 82.88 on HD and between 60 and 74 on UI (on 5 different iMac 21.5 inches same configuration). Although 27″ scored same on CPU, 71.20 only on HD, and a whopping 371.47 on GPU (having theorically the same ATI 4670 than the 21.5″ iMac tested!).

So I wonder if apple, that lied about real GPU model on earlier iMac series, used 4670 Mobile GPU on 21.5 iMac and 4670 Desktop GPU on 27″ iMac, or changed GPU Memory from DDR2 to GDDR3 between models. Seems weird anyway!

More news later, and the saddest thing is that the Core i5/Core i7 models don’t exists anywhere else than technical specification sheets at this time :-(
