Canadian 3G operators planning to lock your iPad 3G
I called them all today, trying to find a data plan for an iPad 3G (I will buy the first I will see on CraigsList!).
The iPad is an unlocked device, as it is usual in Europe, where a majority of cellphone are unlocked, and contrary to noth-america habits where operators lock them, to try locking the user to their plans on the long-run, using lawyers instead R&D or quality of service to gain tractions
Following Apple informations, and confirmed by many international users of iPad 3G, you could use it with whatever 3G data provider of your choice, on the country of your choice, you just have to insert the micro-sim, and it just works! So it enables you to change provider at your will, creating a first-time opportunity for a concurrential market, here in Canada. We pay much more than on many other countries, up to 2X to 5X the same cellphone or 3G data service cost in some European countries!
It seems that all Canadian 3G operators are working for a new way to lock the devices: they do a database of the iPad, enabling only one iPad to be used with a micro-sim card (one plan), and they are probably willing to disable the use of different plans from different providers with the same iPad: they reverse the locking system to be able to lock you on their plans!
I like creativity and technical advancement, except when it’s only done to lock me and you, and protect non-concurrential business practices!
